Many patients panic when they hear that they’ll need to get root canal therapy. This is because there are so many rumors floating around about this procedure, making it seem mysterious, painful, and daunting. You’ll be happy to know that it’s none of those things. Root canal therapy actually relieves painful toothaches caused by infections and allows our patients to preserve their natural smile and avoid tooth extractions. In fact, many of our patients who receive root canal therapy in our Newport, RI dental office are pleasantly surprised at how pain-free and straight-forward the treatment is!
The root canal process typically takes place over the course of two appointments. Dr. Baldelli will begin by accessing the inside of your tooth, where the infected pulp lies, by creating a small window in the biting surface of it. Using special, small instruments, they’ll remove the infected pulp and sanitize the inner chamber of the tooth to ensure that no bacteria linger. They’ll rebuild the structure of the tooth using a substance called gutta percha, and finally, top it off with a customized dental crown for added protection and strength.
