If you’ve experienced significant tooth loss, or your teeth are beyond repair, you may be a candidate for dentures. Although you can’t wait to enjoy a complete, beautiful smile again, it won’t happen overnight. The process of getting dentures can take several weeks, but it’s time well-spent to ensure your new teeth look and feel their best. Here’s what you can expect when investing in dentures.
Denture Process from Start to Finish
The process of getting dentures looks different for everyone because no two mouths or situations are identical. Many factors can affect your timeline, but you can expect the process to include:
Consultation
If you’re ready to replace your lost teeth, your first step is a consultation with a denture dentist. They will examine your mouth and may perform diagnostic services, like X-rays. Your dentist will learn more about your health history and preferences to create a personalized treatment plan.
Preparatory Procedures
Don’t be surprised if you require a little prep work before getting dentures, like tooth extractions or gum disease treatment. You must be healed from any preparatory treatments before getting dentures.
Impressions
Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth to craft an acrylic base to hold your prosthetic teeth. The impression will allow your denture to sit comfortably on your gums, only needing suction to stay in place.
Wax Mock-Up
Your dentist will send your impression to the dental lab to create a wax model of your dentures. The lab will send it back to your dentist, where you will get to “try on” your new set of teeth.
Your dentist will check the fit and bite of your prosthetic to ensure no adjustments are needed. It’s not uncommon to require a modification or two to ensure a snug fit and proper functions.
Denture Delivery
The dental lab will use the wax model to create your final dentures. It will be made of high-quality materials for comfort, aesthetics, and durability. You’ll return to your dentist to receive your dentures and be scheduled for a follow-up appointment. You may require a couple of small adjustments in a few weeks to ensure the best results.
Your dentist will explain the entire process during your denture consultation. They will address any concerns and answer your questions, so you will know exactly what to expect on the road ahead.
