Unexpected events can happen to anyone. You never know when a dental emergency will strike and your mouth needs immediate attention. Whether it’s a severe toothache or a chipped tooth, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible to prevent further damage or harm. However, you may feel a bit anxious about what to expect since going to see the dentist for an emergency is not an everyday event. Here are four of the most common dental emergencies and what your dentist can do to get your smile back on track!

#1. A Knocked-Out Tooth

Nothing is more shocking than when one of your pearly whites comes out of your mouth. Fortunately, there is always a chance a knocked-out tooth can be saved if you act fast. Try to reinsert it into the socket after rinsing it with water.  If your tooth does not hold in place, put in a cup of milk or water, and immediately call your dentist. Once you arrive at your dental office, your dentist will attempt to successfully stabilize and reattach it. If your tooth can’t be saved, they will discuss your replacement options, like a dental implant.

#2. A Broken or Chipped Tooth

Even if you are not experiencing discomfort, it’s best to see a dentist quickly if you have a broken or chipped tooth. Your dentist can evaluate the severity of the injury and then create a customized treatment plan. Minor breaks and chips can often be treated with dental bonding. This involves molding a composite resin material, exactly matching the color of the surrounding teeth, over the injured tooth to cover and protect the blemish. If the damage is more severe, it may be recommended to place a crown over the tooth to restore its health, function, and appearance.

#3. A Toothache

Although many people will allow a toothache to go untreated, it is a definite sign something is wrong with their oral health. Oftentimes it indicates there is an untreated cavity. A simple filling can be used to treat the tooth decay and stop the pain in your mouth. If your discomfort is more severe, your tooth may be infected, which would require root canal therapy. The inner layer of your tooth would need to be removed and then sealed with a special material. A crown will then be placed over the treated tooth to provide an extra layer of protection.

#4. A Broken Restoration or Prosthetic

A crown or denture can be broken unexpectedly while eating or even near the end of its lifespan. If this does occur, be sure to leave the repairs to your dentist. You could further damage your oral health, as well as your restoration or prosthetic if you take matters into your own hands. By visiting your dental office, they can perhaps fix your restoration or prosthetic, so you can quickly return to a complete smile. However, if the damage is too extensive, you may need a replacement.

While dental emergencies can be stressful, your dentist is there to assist you! By visiting them as soon as you can, you can return to a healthy and whole smile before you know it.
